JULIET CULLINAN
CAPE WINE CONNOISSEUR'S AWARD

The aim of hosting the Juliet Cullinan Standard Bank Wine Festival is to offer a selection of the finest wines in the country, together with value wines and to introduce the producer to the end consumer.

HISTORY

The Juliet Cullinan Cape Wine Connoisseur's Awards was introduced in 2000 to highlight the best wines at the Juliet Cullinan Standard Bank Wine Festival. I have enlisted the expertise of what I feel must be South Africa's greatest judges - The Cape Wine Master's, to judge the wines. Each Cape Wine Master has undergone stringent tasting and theoretical examinations, and is able to identify wines from around the globe. Their qualification and expertise is internationally recognised.

THE AIM
To identify the finest three wines in each category exhibited at the Juliet Cullinan Standard Bank Wine Festival, to focus public attention on the premium wines, to increase sales of the winning wines, to highlight the talents of the Cape Wine Connoisseur's , to add greater value to the Juliet Cullinan Standard Bank Wine Festival.

RULES
Wines submitted for judging must be available to the public in reasonable quantities and offered for tasting at the Festival. The wines are served blind, to each Cape Wine Master, in flights of five. The top five scoring wines are re- tasted to select the winners. The wines are scored then discussed to allow judges to assess the wine, and general wine styles, together. This final flight is scored out of 20 and rated 1 - 5. The rating will select the winning wine and the score will define the gold, silver or bronze sticker. The bottle stickers awarded to winemakers reflect this scoring. Gold: 17 and over; SiA/er 16-17; Bronze: 15-16.

I have enlisted the skills and undisputed reputation of KPMG who sit in all of the tastings and oversee the pouring of the wines. They enter the scores of each taster into a computer program they have developed, to process the results.

THE CATEGORIES
Methode Cap Classique, Sauvignon Blanc, Chenin Blanc, Chardonnay. Merlot, Pinotage, Pinot Noir. Cabernet Sauvignon, Shiraz, Red Blends, Ports, Dessert Wines and Muscadels.
